An industrial pH loop is only as reliable as the match between the sensor, the process and the installation. A model that performs well in treated water may be unsuitable for wastewater solids, aggressive chemicals, low-conductivity condensate or repeated hygienic cleaning. Selection should therefore begin with the measurement duty rather than a preferred brand or a single temperature rating.
This guide provides a practical screening method for water treatment, wastewater, chemical processing and hygienic production. It uses current KROHNE SMARTPAT models as documented examples; the final sensor, assembly, cable and approval must still be checked against the complete order code and the manufacturer’s current documents.
Start with the process duty
| Process duty | Important selection questions | Documented KROHNE example |
|---|---|---|
| Potable, treated or general process water | Conductivity, pipe or tank mounting, cleaning access, loop power and HART support | SMARTPAT PH 1590: CPVC body, ceramic diaphragm, 3/4 NPT connection |
| Municipal or industrial wastewater | Solids, oil, coating, chemical compatibility, immersion depth and cleaning frequency | SMARTPAT PH 2390: PPS body and PTFE diaphragm |
| Chemical or high-ionic-strength service | Acids, alkalis, solvent exposure, glass and seal compatibility, pressure and hazardous-area requirements | SMARTPAT PH 8150: glass sensor with open diaphragms |
| Water and wastewater with a conventional PG13.5 assembly | Representative flow, fouling, calibration access, junction condition and process pressure | SMARTPAT PH 8320: glass sensor with PTFE diaphragm |
| Pure or low-conductivity water | Minimum conductivity, flow stability, air exclusion, grounding, contamination and sample temperature | SMARTPAT PH 8530: KROHNE states use above 2 µS/cm |
| Food, beverage or pharmaceutical processing | Cleaning and sterilisation profile, hygienic assembly, elastomers, surface requirements and documentation | SMARTPAT PH 8570: autoclavable sensor for hygienic duties |
Do not select by pH range alone
Several industrial sensors publish the same nominal 0–14 pH span, yet their bodies, junctions, process connections and process limits differ. Those construction details often determine whether the sensor remains stable and serviceable in the real medium. A wastewater loop may need a junction that tolerates coating; a chemical loop requires material compatibility; and low-conductivity water needs a carefully controlled sample system because small contamination or grounding errors can dominate the reading.
Published maximum temperature and pressure values are screening boundaries, not an instruction to operate every configuration at both maxima simultaneously. Review the manufacturer’s pressure-temperature information, mounting assembly and order code. Where hazardous-area or hygienic documentation is required, verify it for the exact ordered version instead of assuming that every family variant carries the same approval.
Junction, body and reference system
The reference junction provides ionic contact between the reference system and the process. Fouling, poisoning or depletion can produce drift and slow response even when the glass membrane is intact. The right junction depends on suspended solids, oils, proteins, aggressive ions and cleaning practice. Body material must also be checked against both the normal process and cleaning chemicals.
For example, KROHNE documents a ceramic diaphragm and CPVC body for the PH 1590, a PTFE diaphragm and PPS body for the PH 2390, open diaphragms for the PH 8150, and three ceramic diaphragms for the low-conductivity PH 8530. These are meaningful engineering differences, not interchangeable marketing descriptions.
Installation and sample-system checklist
| Data to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Normal, minimum and maximum pH | Defines the operating duty and calibration points; excursions may be more important than the normal value |
| Conductivity and ionic strength | Low conductivity can make pH measurement and grounding more demanding; extreme ionic strength affects sensor choice |
| Temperature and pressure together | Screen the complete sensor and assembly within the applicable pressure-temperature boundary |
| Solids, oils, coating and cleaning chemicals | Influence junction design, material compatibility, cleaning interval and mounting orientation |
| Inline, flow-through or immersion mounting | Determines process connection, insertion, representative flow, wetting and maintenance access |
| Signal and control-system interface | Confirm loop power, 4–20 mA scaling, HART host compatibility, cable length and grounding |
| Required certificates and documentation | Must be verified for the exact configuration and destination rather than inferred from a product family |
Plan calibration and maintenance before purchase
A stable measurement point needs safe removal or isolation, suitable buffers, rinse water, cleaning tools and a defined acceptance rule. The mounting assembly should keep the measuring element wetted and representative while allowing technicians to inspect and calibrate it. If the sensor supports offline calibration, plan how calibration records and configuration will be managed and returned to the correct tag.
Cleaning frequency should be based on observed drift and coating, not a generic interval. Harsh mechanical cleaning can damage glass, while incompatible chemicals can attack seals or the body. For hygienic service, review the full cleaning and sterilisation cycle rather than only the process temperature.
