Hygienic instrumentation for CIP and SIP service must be selected as part of the process boundary, not as an isolated transmitter. A catalogue statement such as “CIP capable” is only the starting point. Engineers still need to confirm the exact wetted materials, surface finish, process connection, seal or gasket, drainability, cleaning-cycle conditions, washdown exposure, electrical interface and documentation package for the ordered configuration.
This guide provides a practical selection and RFQ workflow for food and beverage instrumentation and pharmaceutical and biotechnology instrumentation. It does not replace the manufacturer’s configuration tool, approval certificate, installation manual or plant validation procedure.
Start with the cleaning and process envelope
Record the product phase and the full operating cycle: production, rinse, chemical cleaning, steam sterilisation where applicable, cooldown and external washdown. Specify minimum, normal and maximum process pressure and temperature for every phase. A device that is suitable during production can still be unsuitable during cleaning because temperature, pressure, chemical concentration or thermal shock is different.
Then define the measurement duty. Continuous control, custody-related reporting, high-level shutdown and local indication have different consequences if a signal is lost. Keep the process measurement and the independent protection layer separate where the risk assessment requires it.
Technology screening table
| Measurement duty | Useful technology screen | Configuration checks before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Conductive-liquid flow | Hygienic electromagnetic flowmeter; evaluate Coriolis when mass flow, density or non-conductive service is required | Conductivity, liner and electrode compatibility, hygienic connection, gasket, grounding, empty-pipe behavior, cleaning cycle and required verification |
| Pressure or hydrostatic level | Flush-diaphragm electronic transmitter, hygienic diaphragm gauge, or a seal assembly | Diaphragm and fill system, zero position, temperature effect, vacuum, overpressure, output, cleanability and documentation |
| Continuous tank level | Non-contact radar where the vessel geometry and medium provide a stable measurement path | Nozzle and adapter geometry, beam path, agitators, foam, condensation, top dead zone, cleaning cycle and commissioning access |
| Point level protection | Vibronic or another validated point-level principle | Medium behavior, coating, foam, minimum density or dielectric requirements, switch position, proof-test method and hygienic mounting |
| Product or cleaning temperature | Hygienic RTD assembly with a suitable process connection and insertion design | Response time, insertion depth, flow velocity, thermowell stress, sensor replacement philosophy, surface finish and washdown protection |
For flow projects, compare the Endress+Hauser Promag H 300 hygienic electromagnetic flowmeter with the wider flow measurement portfolio. Endress+Hauser publishes Promag H as a hygienic sensor family with CIP/SIP-cleanable wetted materials; exact approvals, materials and connection combinations remain order-code dependent.
Cleanability depends on the complete installation
A certified instrument can be installed badly. Avoid pockets that retain product or cleaning liquid, unapproved gasket combinations, excessive nozzle length and orientations that prevent drainage. The current Rosemount 1408H certification document, for example, assigns responsibilities to the user for the selected adapter, gasket, nozzle limits and drainable installation. That is a useful general lesson: device certification does not automatically certify the assembled nozzle, adapter and vessel installation.
Flush and crevice-minimised interfaces are often preferred for viscous, crystallising or contamination-sensitive media, but “flush” is not a universal approval claim. Verify the exact connection standard and certificate required by the project. The Rosemount 3051HT hygienic pressure transmitter, WIKA PG43SA-S hygienic pressure gauge and KROHNE OPTITEMP TRA-H61 hygienic RTD illustrate different measurement functions that all require configuration-level review.
Documentation and verification matrix
| Evidence item | What procurement should request | Acceptance check |
|---|---|---|
| Product identification | Complete model code, tag, serial-number method and revision-controlled data sheet | Ordered materials and options match the approved instrument data sheet |
| Hygienic claim | Current certificate or declaration for the exact product and process-connection configuration | Scope, version, adapter, gasket and installation conditions are applicable |
| Material traceability | Wetted-material certificates and elastomer declarations required by the quality plan | Heat/lot or certificate linkage is preserved through receiving and installation |
| Surface condition | Specified finish and inspection documentation where required | Measurement method, acceptance limit and wetted scope are defined |
| Calibration or verification | Calibration certificate, verification record and required uncertainty or traceability | Range, units, test points and instrument identity match the project requirement |
| Installation | Current installation and operating manuals | Nozzle, orientation, torque, seal, grounding, drainage and washdown instructions are followed |
Design the measurement loop, not only the sensor
Check cable glands, connectors, enclosure protection and cable routing against external washdown and cleaning chemicals. Confirm that the chosen output and power arrangement fit the control system. Decide how configuration will be locked, backed up and restored. For critical point-level duty, the Endress+Hauser Liquiphant FTL63 hygienic level switch is one family to evaluate, but the selected switch point and proof-test method must come from the real vessel and safety requirement.
For tank level, compare the Rosemount 1408H, Endress+Hauser Micropilot FMR43 and KROHNE OPTIWAVE 3500. Use the vessel drawing and cleaning sequence rather than choosing on radar frequency alone.
