How to Choose Level Instruments for Corrosive Chemical Storage Tanks
Corrosive chemical storage tanks require careful level instrument selection. A standard level transmitter may work during commissioning, but fail early when exposed to acid vapor, alkali liquid, solvent atmosphere or crystallizing chemicals. For industrial pipeline projects, the correct level instrument should be selected according to medium compatibility, installation condition and safety requirement.
Typical Corrosive Tank Applications
| Medium Type | Common Challenge | Possible Level Solution | Selection Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acid storage | Corrosion of wetted parts and vapor attack | Non-contact radar, PTFE-lined instruments, magnetic level gauge with suitable material | Confirm concentration, temperature and tank material |
| Alkali storage | Crystallization and seal damage | Radar level transmitter, DP transmitter with remote seal | Check diaphragm material and flushing requirement |
| Solvent tank | Explosion risk and vapor influence | Explosion-proof radar level transmitter, guided wave radar | Confirm hazardous area classification and grounding |
| Waste chemical tank | Mixed composition and unstable density | Radar or ultrasonic level transmitter | Non-contact measurement can reduce maintenance |
Material Compatibility Comes First
For corrosive liquid level measurement, the wetted material is often more important than the measurement principle. Stainless steel may not be suitable for many acids or chloride-containing media. PTFE, PVDF, Hastelloy, tantalum, ceramic or special coatings may be required depending on chemical concentration and temperature.
If the tank has strong vapor or condensation, the antenna, seal, cable entry and housing protection should also be checked. Corrosion does not only attack the part inside the liquid; chemical vapor can damage exposed instrument parts over time.
Non-Contact vs Contact Measurement
Non-contact radar level transmitters are often preferred for corrosive chemical tanks because the instrument does not touch the liquid. This reduces maintenance and avoids many compatibility problems. However, the radar antenna and process connection still need correct material selection.
Differential pressure level measurement can be useful for closed or pressurized tanks, but remote seals and capillaries must be selected carefully. Magnetic level gauges are simple and visual, but float material, chamber material and process connection rating must match the chemical service.
