Steam systems require coordinated measurement because flow depends on pressure, temperature, density and steam condition. Correct instrumentation helps identify distribution loss, unstable pressure, wet steam and failed steam traps.
Steam measurement plan
| Point | Instrument | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler/header outlet | Pressure + temperature + steam flow | Production and energy balance |
| Pressure-reducing station | Upstream/downstream pressure and temperature | Control performance and superheat condition |
| Major user branch | Compensated flowmeter | Allocation and demand monitoring |
| Condensate return | Flow, temperature and conductivity as required | Return performance and contamination detection |
| Steam trap station | Temperature/ultrasonic inspection | Blocked-open or failed-closed trap screening |
Technology comparison
| Flow technology | Advantages | Key checks |
|---|---|---|
| Vortex | Common for saturated and superheated steam | Velocity, vibration, straight run and compensation |
| DP/orifice | Established and widely standardized | Rangeability, impulse lines and density calculation |
| Ultrasonic | Low permanent pressure loss for suitable applications | Steam condition and manufacturer limits |
| Target/other specialty meters | Application-specific options | Accuracy evidence and pressure loss |
Pressure and temperature installation
Use condensate pots or correctly routed impulse lines where required to protect pressure transmitters from steam temperature. Maintain equal wet-leg conditions for differential-pressure systems. Thermowell design must consider insertion length, velocity, vibration and pressure rating.
Common data errors
- Using uncompensated volumetric flow when mass or energy flow is required.
- Entering wrong steam pressure basis: gauge instead of absolute.
- Ignoring wet steam, entrained condensate or poor separator performance.
- Locating meters immediately downstream of valves or elbows.
- Allowing heat loss or plugged impulse lines to bias pressure readings.
