Compare KROHNE OPTIWAVE 1520 and Endress+Hauser Micropilot FMR20B 80 GHz radar level instruments for tanks, water treatment, utilities and bulk solids.
80 GHz radar level technology
Compact 80 GHz radar instruments use a narrow beam to improve targeting in small vessels and installations with internal obstructions. Correct selection still depends on measuring distance, medium dielectric behavior, antenna, process connection, pressure, temperature, output and hazardous-area requirements.
| Technical item | KROHNE OPTIWAVE 1520 | Endress+Hauser FMR20B |
|---|---|---|
| Radar frequency | 80 GHz | 80 GHz |
| Maximum range | Up to 10 m | Up to 20 m with 40 mm antenna; up to 30 m with 80 mm antenna |
| Accuracy | ±5 mm | Liquids ±2 mm; solids ±4 mm |
| Process connection | G 1½ or 1½ NPT | Thread and flange options by configuration |
| Output / setup | 4–20 mA, HART and Bluetooth options by configuration | 4–20 mA/HART with optional Bluetooth |
| Typical use | Compact liquid and simple solids applications | Liquids and bulk solids with extended measuring range |
Specifications are configuration dependent. Confirm the latest manufacturer datasheet and ordered code for the exact antenna and approval.
Application fit
Water and wastewater tanks
Non-contact radar reduces contact with wastewater and chemicals. Check foam, condensation, inlet turbulence and mounting position.
Chemical storage
Verify wetted antenna materials, process seal, vapor behavior and hazardous-area classification. A suitable nozzle position helps prevent false echoes.
Bulk solids
For powders and granulates, consider filling cone geometry, dust, low dielectric constant and required measuring distance. The FMR20B range varies by antenna size.
Installation checklist
| Check | Engineering requirement | Common risk |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle | Match antenna and allowable nozzle dimensions | Long or narrow nozzles create interference |
| Mounting position | Avoid filling streams, ladders and vessel walls | False echoes and unstable level |
| Range | Include empty distance and blocking distance | Blind zone near antenna |
| Signal output | Match PLC/DCS input and HART requirement | Incorrect loop power or communication |
| Environment | Confirm temperature, pressure and enclosure | Condensation, washdown or outdoor exposure |
How to choose
Choose OPTIWAVE 1520 where a compact 10 m instrument and straightforward connection fit the duty. Consider FMR20B where longer range, antenna selection or liquid/solid accuracy data is central to the application. Final selection must follow the complete process data sheet.
