Quick answer: Select a pressure transmitter by defining the measurement objective first, then confirm pressure type, calibrated range, allowable overpressure, accuracy, wetted materials, process connection, output protocol, environmental protection and hazardous-area requirements. A reliable specification is based on the real process conditions, not only the normal operating pressure.
1. Start with the measurement objective
Pressure transmitters are used for pump monitoring, compressor protection, filter differential pressure, tank hydrostatic level, steam and gas pressure control, custody-related auxiliary measurement and equipment safety. The correct transmitter depends on what the pressure value will be used for. A local indication point may tolerate wider uncertainty, while a control loop, energy balance or protective function requires tighter performance and more careful installation.
Before requesting a quotation, identify the process medium, normal and maximum pressure, minimum and maximum temperature, expected vacuum, pulsation, vibration, ambient conditions, installation location and required control-system interface.
2. Key selection parameters
| Parameter | Engineering question | Selection guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure type | Gauge, absolute or differential? | Match the reference pressure to the physical measurement objective. |
| Measuring range | What are minimum, normal and maximum pressures? | Keep normal operation in the useful part of the calibrated span while allowing startup and upset conditions. |
| Overpressure | Can water hammer, pump trip or valve closure create pressure spikes? | Verify overpressure and burst ratings separately from the calibrated range. |
| Accuracy | Is the point for indication, control, allocation or protection? | Evaluate total performance, including temperature effect, stability and turndown. |
| Wetted materials | Is the medium corrosive, abrasive, viscous or hygienic? | Check diaphragm, process connection, gasket and fill-fluid compatibility. |
| Process connection | Thread, flange, manifold or sanitary fitting? | Match plant standards, pressure class, sealing method and maintainability. |
| Signal | 4–20 mA, HART, fieldbus or digital network? | Confirm compatibility with the DCS, PLC, asset-management system and power supply. |
| Area classification | General area or hazardous location? | Specify the applicable intrinsic-safety or explosion-proof approval and gas/dust group. |
| Enclosure | Outdoor, washdown, marine or corrosive atmosphere? | Select the required ingress protection and housing material. |
3. Choose the pressure range correctly
Range selection is one of the most common sources of poor performance. A transmitter selected only from the normal value may saturate during startup or a process upset. A transmitter with a span far above the operating pressure may provide inadequate resolution and higher total uncertainty after turndown. Use documented minimum, normal, maximum and design pressures, then check the manufacturer’s calibrated-span limits and overpressure rating.
For pulsating service, such as reciprocating pumps and compressors, consider a pulsation dampener, snubber or remote seal arrangement. For steam service, protect the sensing element from excessive temperature with a siphon, condensate leg or suitable impulse piping. These accessories affect response time and should be included in the loop design.
4. Accuracy is more than the reference specification
Reference accuracy is measured under defined laboratory conditions. Real plant performance can also be affected by ambient and process temperature, static pressure, mounting position, long-term drift, power supply, vibration and the selected span. Compare total performance over the expected operating range. For differential-pressure applications, confirm static-pressure effects and zero stability because a small differential measurement may sit on top of a high line pressure.
5. Wetted materials and process compatibility
Stainless steel is widely used but is not universally suitable. Chlorides, strong acids, caustic media, sour gas, high-purity fluids and abrasive slurries may require alternative diaphragm materials, coatings or remote seals. Compatibility must include every wetted component, not only the diaphragm. Consider corrosion rate, hydrogen permeation, crevice corrosion, stress-corrosion cracking, gasket limits and cleaning chemicals.
Remote diaphragm seals can isolate the sensor from hot, corrosive, viscous, crystallizing or plugging media. Their capillary length, fill fluid, diaphragm size and temperature range affect response and measurement error. For vacuum or high-temperature service, verify the seal system as a complete assembly.
6. Installation and commissioning checklist
- Locate the pressure tapping where flow disturbance and sediment accumulation are minimized.
- Mount impulse lines to prevent trapped gas in liquid service and trapped liquid in gas service.
- Use a manifold where isolation, equalization, venting or calibration access is required.
- Confirm grounding, cable shielding, polarity and loop power before energizing.
- Set the lower and upper range values to the approved instrument datasheet.
- Perform leak testing, zero verification and loop checks before startup.
- Record the as-left configuration, tag number, serial number and calibration result.
7. Information to include in an RFQ
A complete pressure-transmitter inquiry should include tag number, service description, pressure type, calibrated range and engineering units, design pressure and temperature, process medium, wetted materials, process connection, output protocol, display requirement, enclosure and cable entry, hazardous-area approval, mounting accessories, manifold or remote seal details, calibration certificate and required documentation.
