Pump reliability depends on the complete hydraulic system. A useful monitoring package combines suction pressure, discharge pressure, flow, tank level, temperature and vibration so operators can distinguish process restrictions from mechanical faults.
Recommended measurement points
| Location | Instrument | What it reveals |
|---|---|---|
| Suction line | Absolute or gauge pressure transmitter | Low inlet pressure, blocked strainer, inadequate static head |
| Discharge line | Pressure transmitter | Developed head and downstream resistance |
| Pump discharge | Flowmeter | Operating point, minimum-flow protection and process demand |
| Supply tank | Level transmitter/switch | Dry-run prevention and available suction head |
| Bearing/casing | Temperature and vibration sensors | Mechanical degradation and abnormal operating condition |
Diagnostic pattern table
| Observed pattern | Possible cause | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Low suction pressure + low flow | Blocked strainer or suction restriction | DP across strainer; valve position |
| Normal suction + high discharge pressure + low flow | Downstream restriction | Pressure profile and valve status |
| Low discharge pressure + high flow | System resistance lower than design | Pump curve and control-valve position |
| Fluctuating pressure and flow | Cavitation, air ingress or two-phase flow | Absolute suction pressure, tank level and vibration |
| Normal hydraulics + high vibration | Mechanical alignment or bearing issue | Vibration spectrum and maintenance inspection |
Instrument requirements
- Use absolute pressure where vapor-pressure margin is being evaluated.
- Select fast enough response without amplifying process pulsation.
- Protect pressure ports from plugging and temperature extremes.
- Choose a flow technology compatible with conductivity, viscosity, solids and gas content.
- Set dry-run and minimum-flow trips from approved pump and process limits.
Relevant SANTAN categories: pressure instruments, flowmeters, level instruments and temperature instruments.
Final trip settings require review by the pump manufacturer and responsible process engineer. Send the pump curve, P&ID and operating data to sales@santanfluid.com for instrument selection support.
