A correctly selected flowmeter can still perform poorly when installed near elbows, valves, pumps or partially filled pipework. This guide summarizes the information engineers should verify before installing electromagnetic, ultrasonic, Coriolis, vortex or differential-pressure flowmeters.
Installation planning table
| Technology | Best suited to | Main installation checks | Common risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electromagnetic | Conductive liquids | Full pipe, grounding, conductivity, liner compatibility | Empty pipe or gas pockets |
| Ultrasonic | Liquids or gases; large lines | Flow profile, acoustic path, bubbles/solids | Distorted profile |
| Coriolis | Mass flow and density | Support, vibration, two-phase flow, pressure loss | Entrained gas |
| Vortex | Steam, gas and liquids | Reynolds number, vibration, straight run | Low velocity |
| DP primary element | Broad industrial service | Impulse lines, tapping orientation, density compensation | Plugged or wet legs |
Straight-run requirements
Use the manufacturer’s certified installation manual as the governing requirement. When space is restricted, do not assume a generic distance. Confirm the specific sensor, upstream disturbance and whether a flow conditioner is approved.
| Upstream disturbance | Engineering response |
|---|---|
| Single elbow | Increase upstream straight run and maintain a stable pipe plane |
| Two out-of-plane elbows | Treat as severe swirl; consult model-specific guidance |
| Control valve | Prefer valve downstream of the meter where process design permits |
| Pump discharge | Avoid cavitation and pulsation; provide sufficient back pressure |
| Reducer/expander | Use gradual transitions and verify velocity limits |
Velocity and range selection
Size the meter using minimum, normal and maximum flow, not pipe size alone. Check velocity, pressure loss, Reynolds number and turndown. Oversized meters may operate below their reliable range; undersized meters create unnecessary pressure loss.
Commissioning checklist
- Confirm flow direction and pipe is full.
- Verify grounding, shielding and power supply.
- Enter pipe diameter, liner, fluid and engineering units correctly.
- Check zero under approved no-flow conditions.
- Compare totalizer, control-system value and local display.
- Record baseline diagnostics for future maintenance.
