RTD or Thermocouple for Boiler Service?
RTDs are often selected for feedwater, condensate and moderate-temperature utility points where accuracy and stability matter. Thermocouples are often selected for high-temperature steam, flue gas and boiler outlet points where higher temperature capability and fast response are important.
Installation Considerations
- Use a suitable thermowell for pressure, temperature and flow velocity.
- Install the probe where it reaches representative flow, not dead zones.
- Avoid locations with severe vibration or mechanical stress.
- Confirm transmitter range and output signal for the control system.
- Check cable insulation and head protection for high-temperature areas.
Common Problems in Steam Temperature Measurement
Slow response may come from an oversized thermowell or poor sensor contact. Unstable readings may come from wiring issues, vibration, moisture in terminal heads or incorrect transmitter configuration. For high-pressure steam service, thermowell strength and connection rating must be checked carefully.
