A clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter measures from sensors mounted outside a pipe. For beverage plants, engineers may evaluate this approach on water, hot-water, glycol or other compatible utility lines when they need a flow signal without cutting the pipe. Suitability depends on the meter configuration, fluid, pipe wall, sensor mounting and required measurement performance. It does not make every beverage process line a suitable clamp-on application.
This selection note uses the Siemens SITRANS FS230 as an example of a configurable clamp-on system. Always select the exact measuring mode and sensor set from the manufacturer documentation for the actual fluid and operating conditions.
Start with the measurement objective
| Question | Engineering information to collect | Selection impact |
|---|---|---|
| What is the fluid? | Composition, phase, expected solids or gas fraction, viscosity range and temperature | Confirms the intended measurement mode and whether the acoustic path is feasible |
| What pipe is available? | Outside diameter, wall thickness, material, lining, coating and condition | Enters the sensor setup and affects acoustic transmission |
| What performance is required? | Normal, minimum and maximum flow, direction, turndown and uncertainty allowance | Determines sensor type, path count, configuration and acceptance criteria |
| What is the installation geometry? | Upstream and downstream disturbances, valves, pumps, bends, access and insulation | Helps assess flow profile and the straight-run assumptions for the selected setup |
Understand installation advantages and limits
The Siemens FS230 product documentation describes a clamp-on system using external sensors and provides standard, hydrocarbon and gas configuration options. The non-intrusive mounting approach can avoid pipe cutting and a process shutdown for sensor installation. For a new project, compare that advantage with the need to know the pipe construction accurately, maintain sensor coupling, protect the mounting location and provide access for inspection.
Do not transfer a published accuracy number without its conditions. Manufacturer specifications can depend on fluid velocity, sensor selection, path arrangement, pipe size and straight-run conditions. Record the basis used for any acceptance target and confirm it against the selected model’s current technical sheet.
Plan commissioning and data validation
Prepare a pipe-data record before commissioning: material, outer diameter, wall thickness, lining, fluid and temperature. Confirm sensor spacing and orientation in the manufacturer configuration software or installation instructions. Select a representative operating condition and compare the new reading with a suitable reference measurement or mass balance. Investigate differences before using the signal for billing, custody transfer, product release or a safety function.
| Commissioning check | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Pipe and fluid entry | As-built pipe dimensions, material and process temperature |
| Sensor installation | Sensor model, path count, location, spacing and mounting record |
| Signal quality | Diagnostics, signal strength and stable reading at known operating points |
| Validation | Comparison method, reference instrument or process balance and observed deviation |
Where to consider an inline meter instead
Choose an inline instrument when the process requires wetted measurement, when pipe access or acoustic coupling is unsuitable, or when the application specification calls for an instrument with a different measurement principle. For product contact, the full assembly must meet the plant’s hygienic design and cleaning requirements; external mounting alone does not establish suitability for a hygienic duty.
