Temperature measurement is a basic but critical point in industrial pipeline instrumentation. RTDs and thermocouples are both widely used, but they are designed for different temperature ranges, accuracy requirements, response speeds and installation environments. Choosing the wrong sensor can lead to unstable control, short service life and incorrect process data.
RTD vs Thermocouple: Main Difference
An RTD measures temperature by the resistance change of a metal element, commonly platinum. A thermocouple generates a voltage based on the temperature difference between two dissimilar metals. In practical engineering, RTDs are often selected for better accuracy and stability at moderate temperatures, while thermocouples are preferred for higher temperatures, faster response and rugged service.
| عامل الاختيار | RTD | Thermocouple |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Process pipelines, tanks, HVAC, chemical utilities | Boilers, furnaces, high-temperature steam and engines |
| الدقة | Generally higher and more stable | Usually lower but adequate for high-temperature service |
| Response | Moderate, depends on probe design | Fast, especially with small-diameter probes |
| Signal | Resistance signal, often with transmitter | Millivolt signal, often with transmitter or compensating cable |
When to Choose RTD
- Process temperature requires better accuracy and repeatability.
- The application is within moderate temperature range.
- Long-term stability is important for quality control.
- The installation environment allows a protected probe or thermowell.
When to Choose Thermocouple
- The temperature is high, such as steam, furnace or exhaust service.
- Fast response is more important than high precision.
- The sensor must withstand vibration or harsh mechanical conditions.
- The project requires a simple and cost-effective high-temperature solution.
Engineering Data to Confirm
Before selecting an RTD or thermocouple, confirm the measuring range, insertion length, process connection, thermowell requirement, head type, cable type, signal output and hazardous area requirement. For pipeline installation, the thermowell material and wake frequency check can be just as important as the sensor itself.
