Coriolis vs Electromagnetic Flowmeter: Engineering Selection Guide for Liquids

Coriolis vs electromagnetic flowmeter selection begins with the measurement objective, not the brand name. Both technologies can be excellent for industrial liquids, but they solve different problems. A magnetic flowmeter measures the velocity of an electrically conductive liquid and reports volumetric flow. A Coriolis meter directly measures mass flow and can also provide density and temperature-related process information. The correct choice depends on conductivity, required outputs, pressure-loss allowance, line size, fluid behaviour and lifecycle cost.

This table is a screening tool, not a substitute for model sizing. Final suitability must be confirmed against the current manufacturer sizing software, complete order code and process data.

Choose an electromagnetic flowmeter when conductivity and line economics dominate

A magnetic meter is usually the first technology to evaluate when the liquid is conductive, the required result is volumetric flow and the process benefits from an unobstructed measuring tube. Water, wastewater, many acids and bases, mineral slurries and other conductive liquids are common candidates. It is particularly attractive when a large line would make a mass-flow solution unnecessarily expensive or when pressure loss must be minimized.

Conductivity alone does not complete the selection. The meter must remain completely filled, the electrodes must stay in contact with the liquid, and the electrical reference or grounding arrangement must match the pipe construction. Liner, electrode and seal materials must be checked against the exact concentration, temperature, pressure, cleaning chemicals and solids content. For a broader technology screen, see our industrial flowmeter selection guide.

Choose a Coriolis meter when mass, density or composition insight matters

A Coriolis meter is the stronger starting point when the control or accounting variable is mass rather than volume, when density changes make volume-to-mass conversion unreliable, or when density is itself a useful process variable. It can also suit non-conductive liquids that a magnetic meter cannot measure. Typical duties include chemical dosing, blending, loading, concentration monitoring and high-value batching.

The meter still has to be sized carefully. A tube that is too small can consume excessive pressure; one that is too large may operate too close to its zero-stability limit at minimum flow. Entrained gas, flashing, external vibration, mounting orientation and the ability to keep the tubes full during zeroing must all be reviewed. A Coriolis meter is not automatically the best choice merely because it offers more variables.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Define the required result. Decide whether the control system needs actual volume, standard volume, mass, density, concentration or more than one variable.
  2. Characterize the fluid. Record conductivity, density range, viscosity, solids, bubbles, corrosiveness, coating tendency and phase-change risk at all operating conditions.
  3. Set the operating envelope. Provide minimum, normal and maximum flow, pressure and temperature, not only the design maximum.
  4. Set the hydraulic limit. State the available pressure-loss budget and check it at maximum flow and maximum viscosity.
  5. Check installation reality. Confirm full-pipe condition, reducers, valves, pumps, vibration, orientation, supports, straight-run availability and access for maintenance.
  6. Compare lifecycle value. Include wiring, calibration, diagnostics, pressure loss, spares and the cost of additional density or temperature instruments.
