Apa Itu Instrumen Explosion Proof dan Kapan Diperlukan?

Explosion-proof instrumentation is required when an instrument may be installed in an area where flammable gas, vapor, mist or combustible dust can create an explosive atmosphere. In these locations, ordinary electrical instruments may become an ignition source through sparks, hot surfaces or fault conditions. Explosion-proof or hazardous area instrumentation is designed and certified to reduce ignition risk according to a defined protection method, such as flameproof enclosure, intrinsic safety or increased safety.

For buyers, the key is not only whether a product is called “explosion-proof”. The actual requirement depends on the site classification, protection type, gas group, temperature class, cable entry, ambient temperature and certificate accepted by the project. A pressure transmitter, flowmeter, radar level transmitter, temperature sensor or valve positioner may all require hazardous area approval when installed in classified zones.

Application Scenarios

Explosion-proof and hazardous area instruments are commonly specified in industries where combustible media are processed, stored or transferred.

  • Oil and gas production, gas processing, LNG facilities, terminals and loading stations.
  • Petrochemical and chemical plants handling solvents, hydrocarbons, alcohols or reactive gases.
  • Tank farms and storage areas for fuels, chemicals and flammable liquids.
  • Paint, coating, resin and adhesive production lines with solvent vapor exposure.
  • Dust-related applications such as powder handling, grain processing or combustible solid storage.
  • Wastewater, biogas and environmental facilities where methane may be present.

Selection Parameter Table

Before selecting an explosion-proof instrument, confirm the following parameters with the project specification or plant safety team.

Selection ItemMeaningWhat to Confirm
Zone or DivisionDefines the probability of an explosive atmosphere being presentConfirm Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2 or local classification requirement.
Protection TypeThe method used to prevent ignitionConfirm Ex d, Ex ia, Ex ib, Ex e or another specified protection type.
Gas GroupThe ignition sensitivity of the gas atmosphereConfirm IIA, IIB, IIC or the exact project requirement.
Temperature ClassThe maximum surface temperature of the instrumentConfirm T1-T6 according to process medium and ambient condition.
CertificateOfficial proof of complianceCheck IECEx, ATEX or required regional certification before purchase.
Cable Entry / GlandElectrical interface between field wiring and the instrumentConfirm thread type, cable gland approval and installation accessories.

Common Mistakes or Technical Notes

Hazardous area selection is one of the most common places where instrument orders become delayed. Several details deserve special attention.

  • Explosion-proof and intrinsically safe are not the same. The correct protection method must match the loop design and installation practice.
  • The certificate must cover the exact model and option code being supplied, not just a similar product family.
  • Cable glands, junction boxes and barriers can affect compliance; the instrument alone does not make the whole installation compliant.
  • Ambient temperature can reduce allowable ratings, especially in outdoor, desert, steam tracing or heated process areas.
  • If replacing an old instrument, match the old approval requirement or confirm whether the plant standard has changed.

Recommended Products / Brands

Santan Fluid can help compare hazardous area options across imported and Chinese instrument brands for pressure, flow, level, temperature and valve control applications.

  • Rosemount pressure and differential pressure transmitters for hazardous areas.
  • Yokogawa transmitters and field instruments for process plants.
  • Endress+Hauser Promass, Promag, radar level and pressure devices with hazardous area options.
  • KROHNE flow and level instruments for chemical and oil service.
  • WIKA pressure and temperature instruments with approval options.
  • Samson positioners and control valve accessories for classified areas.

Explosion-proof selection should begin with the area classification drawing or plant safety instruction. A product used safely in a non-hazardous utility room may not be suitable for a tank farm, loading bay or chemical storage area. Even within the same plant, one measurement point may require intrinsic safety while another may require a flameproof enclosure. The instrument buyer should therefore confirm the exact installation location, not only the process medium.

Another important point is installation practice. Hazardous area approval can be affected by cable glands, conduit sealing, barriers, grounding, junction boxes and maintenance procedures. If the field installation does not follow the certificate and local rules, the system may still fail inspection. For international projects, it is helpful to ask for the certificate and model approval information before placing the order, especially when the end user has a strict vendor document review process.

Before confirming the order, buyers should also check the datasheet revision, tag number, quantity, lead time, certificate language, packing requirement and shipping documents. These details look administrative, but they affect project approval and site acceptance. For urgent orders, it is better to confirm which technical parameters are mandatory and which options can be substituted, so the supplier can recommend a faster but still reliable solution.

When requesting an explosion-proof instrument quotation, include the hazardous area classification, required certificate, medium, process temperature, ambient temperature, connection, signal and installation location. This prevents approval mismatch and saves review time.
